OK, so I'm not very good about keeping this updated. I do appreciate hearing responses, though, even if they are long after the date of the post. Thanks!

Well, here we are in budget time again. Thank goodness here in California we have a law that says the state budget must be signed on time. And thank goodness we have dedicated state legislators who take their job seriously and put partisan bickering aside in order to do what's right for the people of California... or wait... am I hallucinating again? Boy, you skip one dose of medication and you can start believing anything.

And thank goodness we are allowed to run our programs according to client needs and not fiscal needs... or wait... did I skip another dose of meds? The state bestowed a generous 3% rate increase to go directly towards staff wages as long as we spend at least 51% of our training time in the community. It doesn't matter where we spend our community time, or what we do in the community, or actually whether or not clients want to be in the community, or if they have medical or other conditions that make it uncomfortable for them to be in the community so much.

There's some real person centered planning for you.

And how reasonable that they tied the lack of client choice to money for staff. More money for staff if we ignore client wants and needs.

Oh, did I say all that out loud?

Moving on. I am happy to report that we have now sold our SNAP Curriculum in 20 states and one foreign country! We sold curriculum to an agency in Ireland. How cool is that? The curriculum is out in the latest edition of the Training Resources for Disability Professionals and Educators catalog, also. Check out our website at www.snapcurriculum.org .

I am also working on a draft set of guidelines for writing Individual Service Plans. If anyone is interested in sharing ideas about writing plans, I would love to hear from you.

Lastly, I would be very interested in hearing from other agencies who do their training in small groups. We are a 1:3 ratio program. Where do you eat lunch in the community on a really rainy day? How many times can you work on ISP Objectives in the same K-Mart each week? We live in a rural area with limited options for community activities. We manage to keep it fairly fresh thanks to our resilient and creative staff, but we could always use some new ideas.
